Iceland
Winter is coming! It will come as no surprise that those chilly scenes of the Mountain Beyond the Wall in season 7 were filmed in a destination renowned for its spectacular frozen landscapes. Kirkjufell is a mountain in the Snæfellsnes peninsula that Game of Thrones fans will remember as being referred to as “The mountain shaped like an arrowhead” in the series. It is one of the most popular locations in Iceland for photography and is about 2 and a half hours away from the bustling capital Reykjavík, depending on the weather. Worth the drive!
Croatia
Ever wonder where the many outdoor scenes of the King’s Landing were filmed? Wonder no more! The ancient, walled city in the story was in fact filmed in Dubrovnik, Croatia. Now a popular tourist destination, Dubrovnik is filled with great restaurants and lots of tours designed for a Game of Thrones enthusiast.
Northern Ireland
The King’s Landing and the King’s Road leading from the former in the TV series are in fact several miles apart as it relates to filming locations. The King’s Road scenes were filmed in Northern Ireland on Bregagh Road, a dark tunnel of beech trees known as the Dark Hedges that leads to a Georgian mansion. Fans will recall that this is the road Arya Stark uses to escape, disguised as a boy on a quest to find Jon Snow.
Spain
Many scenes of the action-packed series were filmed in very different parts of this geographically-diverse European nation. Seville was the location chosen to film scenes in season 5 that take place in the fictional Dorne, but other Spanish cities such as Barcelona, Córdoba and Girona featured as well. Not to mention the small seaside town Zumaia where the picturesque beach Itzurun was the backdrop of Dragonstone, the fictional home of Daenerys Targaryen.
Morocco
The people that Daenerys freed in the season 3 finale were from the fictional city of Astapor, the background of which is actually the Moroccan city Essaouira. And cities of the hit series Yunkai and Pentos were in fact filmed in Aït-Ben-Haddou, a popular location for movie sets in Morocco, as well as a UNESCO World Heritage site and a favourite among tourists in the area.
