Sint Maarten / Saint Martin
This unique island is Dutch on the Sint Maarten side and French on the Saint Martin side.
These two nationalities have lived side by side for many years with no customs or border patrol between them. Sint Maarten is livelier with casinos and big hotels and tends to be less expensive than the French side. Saint Martin has more intimate luxurious hotels, less nightlife and no casinos. Your shopping experience on both sides of the island is guaranteed to be a memorable one as every square mile is tax free.
The warm sunshine and tropical climate makes it a year round destination for a range of outdoor activities. Enjoy windsurfing, snorkelling and even sun-bathing along the island’s amazing coast. You can also dive into the depths of the Caribbean Sea, visiting some of the island’s revered dive sites. Encounter a colourful array of biodiversity which is sure to leave you speechless. Wish for an intimate rendezvous? Grab your paddles and enjoy a kayak adventure into the numerous secret coves and calm inlets. From the waters, take to the land and bike your way through the mixture of smooth and rugged terrain and see a serene paradise lined in natural beauty.
Be sure to visit the numerous tourist attractions including Philipsburg, capital of Sint Maarten where shopping on Front Street and Back Street will keep you busy. Explore the Sint Maarten zoo which is home to over sixty species of exotic animals, birds and reptiles or venture into the hallowed halls of the Sint Maarten Museum where you will see the relics from the European settlement on the island.
On Saint Martin, visit the capital Marigot where you can explore the best upscale shopping the island has to offer. A visit to Grand Case, known as the gourmet capital, is a must. If you love beaches, explore Orient Beach, one of the busiest and most famous beaches in the Caribbean where swimwear is optional.
