The Netherlands
Flowers and Fun
It might sound like a stereotype, but when you travel to The Netherlands, you'll probably find yourself riding around on a bicycle with a bouquet of tulips in your basket. Since everyone around you is doing the same, the fact that it's a stereotype probably won't be a problem! Before you book your flights and tours to The Netherlands' capital of Amsterdam, here's more about what you can expect.
What to do
Much of your time in The Netherlands will be spent in Amsterdam, where the narrow streets filled with watery canals and tall, narrow houses will feel like something out of a fairytale. In one of those fabled houses is the former home of Anne Frank, who hid there during World War II, now a museum. Not far away are museums that house the works of Vermeer and Rembrandt, representing some of the works of Europe's Golden Age. In summer, visit a local farmer's market and pack a picnic for Vondel Park, where you'll get a look at some of Amsterdam's most colorful characters. If you're feeling adventurous, take a tour through the city's red light district, or visit the Heineken brewery and sip The Netherlands' most famous brew. And of course, top it all off with a tour of the country's signature tulip fields, stretching for miles as far as the eye can see.
What to eat
Peek into any one of The Netherlands' bakeries and chances are you won't be able to walk on by. The country's pastries and chocolates are a delight that can't be missed -- and most likely you won't. Also worth sampling are the many delicious cheeses, breads and meats that combine to make a memorable sandwich. If you sense of adventure is still intact, also try the raw herring; it's a Dutch specialty.
When to go
The Netherlands can be cold and rainy in the winter months, so the best times to visit -- and to see the tulips -- are in late spring or early summer. Besides flower season, the weather can still be pleasant into early fall. But whatever time you visit, you're sure to be enchanted with the fun and jovial nature of the Dutch people!
