Dubrovnik
This Croatian city is in the region of Dalmatia, on the Adriatic Sea. The city has been on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1979. The baroque buildings and marble streets are always awe-inspiring, and you can enjoy fascinating museums and stroll around the picturesque city before cooling off in the sparkling ocean. It is easy to get to Dubrovnik and there are over 40 hotels there, although choosing one in the medieval Old Town is particularly enticing because it is so pretty there and you will be right in the heart of the city.
What to See and Do
The walls run nearly 1¼ miles around the city and they are up to 20 feet thick. You can stroll around the walls to get a wonderful view of the city, enjoying the towers and turrets, as well as the little shops you will find up there. For more views, consider the cable car which will take you from the city walls to Mount Srd in just 4 minutes, where you can admire Dubrovnik from 1,329 feet up. After exploring the Old Town and walking the walls, you might like to take a ferry to Mljet, which is an island off Dubrovnik boasting villages, bays and gorgeous sandy beaches. The northwestern part is very well-kept National Park. Korcula Island, Lokrum and Lopud Island are also wonderful to visit. There is no shortage of bars, clubs and restaurants, and you can find all kinds of cuisines from Mediterranean to local fare, creative cuisine, and even sushi bars. You can also spend some time shopping. Dubrovnik is known for goldsmiths, chocolatiers, embroidery, natural cosmetics, and even wine.
When to Visit
September and October are good times to visit Croatia. The peak season is the middle of the summer but the weather can be stifling hot then and you will also have thousands of people coming off the cruise ships each day, so choose the fall or even the spring and you can still expect warm waters but without the crowds.
