Copenhagen
Copenhagen is the most populated city in Denmark as well as its capital. A lot of the attractions are within walking distance, so you can explore a large part of this city on foot. Copenhagen has plenty of history and the city dates back to 1043, so there are plenty of sights, landmarks, museums and significant buildings for you to discover, whether you are there for a long weekend or a longer stay. Although the summer tends to be the busiest time to visit, it is also the best. Anytime between May and October is good for a visit. October to April tends to be very quiet (and cold!) although Christmas and New Year attract some crowds.
What to See and Do
Tivoli Gardens is well worth a visit, and this amusement park is near City Hall. There is something here for everybody, from historic buildings and impressive architecture to gorgeous gardens and of course there are rides not only for thrill-seekers but also of the nostalgic variety. The statue of The Little Mermaid is at Langelinje Pier. This bronze and granite statue was inspired by the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale. Head to Copenhagen Zoo and you will not be disappointed. You can even see polar bears, seals and North Atlantic birds there. Amalienborg Palace is home to Denmark’s royal family. Admire the stately architecture and watch the changing of the guard. Nyhavn is full of cozy restaurants all along the quay where you can while away an hour enjoying some Danish beer or else treat yourselves to dinner. Do not miss number 9, the oldest house there dating back to 1681, or number 20 where Hans Christian Andersen lived.
Best Place for Shopping
Strøget is perfect if you are in the mood for shopping. This is one of the longest pedestrian streets in Europe and you will find all kinds of stores lining it on both sides from budget shops to high-end designer brands. There are also street performers on the Strøget so you never know what kind of impromptu performance you might be treated to.
