Norway
Northern lights, northern delights
When you’re planning a European vacation, Norway may not be at the top of your list -- but it should be! People who travel to Norway say it’s one of the most beautiful places on Earth, and we tend to agree! In winter, the country is a haven for winter sports enthusiasts. In summer, it’s a warm, sunny place where the locals love to play. And any time of year, it’s definitely one of the best places to see the Northern Lights -- those magical streaks of color that paint the sky.
What to do
Most people who travel to Norway start out in the capital city of Oslo, where there’s plenty to see and do. Located on a fjord -- a deep inlet of the ocean between cliffs -- just arriving into the city is a sight to behold. The capital city is full of delights that include the Vigeland Sculpture Park, one of the world’s largest collections of sculptures put together by just one artist, as well as quaint cobbled streets, folk museums, festivals, gardens, and historic architecture. Also be sure to visit the Royal Palace during the afternoons, when you’ll get to witness the daily ritual of the changing of the guard.
Beyond Oslo, check out the outstanding national parks of Norway, which feature colossal glaciers and awesome wildlife. Naturally, you can get to many of the parks via boat, traveling up and down the fjords and catching some views of the Northern Lights along the way. If you’re into winter sports, Norway is also the place to go skiing, snowboarding, ice skating or sledding, or simply to while away an afternoon in a pair of snowshoes. In the summer, those same bodies of water where you went ice skating will also be where you’ll dip in to cool off!
When to Visit
Norway’s fairest weather happens in the summer months, so if you’re not equipped for winter weather, that’s definitely the time to go. Still, Norwegians tend to love the snow and ice, so don’t worry about having nothing to do should you decide to visit during the winter months!
