Russia
A world of adventure in the world’s largest country
When you’re planning a trip to the world’s largest country, you can be sure you’ll have plenty of things to see and do. You might travel to Russia to see one of the many spectacular dance or opera performances, or you might be along for the ride along the Trans Siberian Express. Whatever your aspirations, the first step is to learn as much as you can about this sprawling nation -- which is more of a region than a single nation, really.
Things to do
People who travel to Russia often take part in a guided tour, and with the differences in language and the alphabet, it’s often the easiest way to get around. Tours often start out in the capital city of Moscow, and for very good reason. That’s where you’ll catch famous sights such as Red Square, or the bulbous towers of The Kremlin, or catch the famous Bolshoi Ballet Company at the Bolshoi Theatre. It’s also where you can get a taste of the wild nightlife that Moscow is so known for -- but be warned -- you’d better be able to hold your vodka if you’re planning to visit one of the many luxurious nightclubs in the city.
From Moscow, you might venture on to the city of St. Petersburg, where you can take a canal cruise through the city’s famous canals, or stay up all night in the summertime; the city has a full three weeks of total daylight during the summer months. When you travel to Russia you can also take part in world-class fishing, go skiing in the Western Caucasus, or visit Sochi, the home of the 2014 Winter Olympics.
Where to stay
Russia’s accommodations run the gamut from luxury chain hotels to bed and breakfasts and even home stays. In the cities, expect comfortable accommodations. Since the culture can be quite different from what you’re used to back home, consider staying in a smaller bed and breakfast, or even in a home stay for a few days, where you can learn much more about Russian culture, and even get to see it from an insider’s perspective.
