We were initially told that passengers travelling to Jamaica via Trinidad, Guyana, Suriname or Venezuela must have in their possession an International Immunization Card with proof of their updated Yellow Fever Vaccination. This would have applied to passengers departing from Barbados travelling to Jamaica on Caribbean Airlines as the flight goes via Trinidad & Tobago.

On July 4, 2016 the Ministry of Health in Jamaica issued the following instructions which supercedes and replaces all previous advisories on this matter:

  1. Only individuals travelling directly from countries listed on the World Health Organization (WHO) 2016, list of countries requiring yellow fever vaccines (Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana, Suriname and Venezuela) are required to provide proof of vaccination for entry in accordance with the WHO guidance on this matter.
  2. Persons transiting through countries listed by the WHO as requiring yellow fever vaccination will not be required to provide proof of vaccination if stay is for 12 hours or less.
  3. For those arriving from a country designated by the WHO as having active yellow fever transmission but not experiencing a current outbreak and is not in possession of a yellow fever vaccination certificate; they are to be interviewed and screened for symptoms. If found to be symptomatic, they can be landed, given a health alert card and advised to immediately contact the nearest health department should any symptoms develop. For persons who are symptomatic, further investigations should be carried out including refused landing, quarantine and examination by a physician to rule out yellow fever.
  4. Note that at this time, anyone arriving from Angola directly or indirectly must provide proof of yellow fever vaccination.

For example, passengers boarding Caribbean Airlines in Barbados, travelling to Jamaica, will be intransit in Trinidad for less than an hour and will not require the vaccine.
